Backyard Ice Rink – Build Your Own Ice Rink Right In Your Backyard!

If you are considering building yourself a backyard ice rink, there is some background information you should already know. Ice rink is basically made from a body of water in its solidified or frozen form or it can also be made from hardened chemicals. Nowadays, there are two general types of ice rink: the natural ice rink made from a frozen river or pond, and the artificial or mechanically frozen ice rink which is made either by a producing a coolant that helps freezing up the temperature below the surface of the water or by synthetic plastics made as skating surfaces.

A backyard ice rink is mostly primarily dependent on Nature. It is ideal to put up your backyard ice rink on a place where the ground is even and leveled. Other important things to consider before putting up your own version of backyard ice rink are the following:

Type of ice rink

Think of the design which best suits your area. You can either go for the traditional method, wherein you (in order to freeze the surface) first need to pack and re-pack the snow thoroughly and flood the surface with water. Be sure to do this once the weather becomes consistently cold and the snow is around 20 to 30 centimeters thick.

You can proceed with this method with or without boards

Or you can try the liner method when your place is in an area where the climate oftentimes becomes mild during winter. You will need rink tarp or rink liner here. Or maybe, you can opt for mechanically-frozen or the refrigerated method if you want a longer ice skating season. A system of ice rink chillers made of salty-water refrigerant is incorporated in this method.

Make a plan for our backyard ice rink

Consider the size of the area. Make sure that your area is flat and even leveled, and the would-be size of your ice rink is conducive to the size of your backyard. Try to remove all possible obstacles when designing your ice rink.

Decide on putting on a liner or not

Plastic liners or plastic tarps both are useful especially if you want to achieve a longer ice rink life span and if you want a lower maintenance ice rink since these liners hold and retain the water you flood on the rink surface.

Decide on placing rink boards

Rink boards are important especially if you want to maximize the fun you can get from your backyard ice rink. These rink boards not only aids in water retention wherein you can flood water easily on the rink surface, you can also keep the excess snow behind these boards, which you can withdraw from easily once you need them later.

Time

Depending on your location, start building your backyard ice rink when the temperature is already consistently cold.
